I did it! On Saturday I accomplished my goal! I wanted to run a 5k in under 30 minutes. I finished in 29:22.

Racers cross finish line in 5K run for Navy Chief birthday.

My wife and my daughter waited at the finish line to cheer me on and give me high fives as I crossed the finish line. They made me feel like I won an Olympic gold medal.

I know this probably sounds silly. You may be thinking, “What’s the big deal?”

The big deal is I’m having ankle surgery in three weeks. I am probably going to be on crutches for 12 weeks. Anytime you have a surgery like this, there is no guarantee that you will ever be the same. I have never run a 5k before. In fact, I have never run that far in my life. Running this 5k was my way of sticking it to ankle surgery. I am not going to let surgery hold me back.

I hit my goal! And let me tell you, it feels great!

I feel like I just walked up to big, bad Mr. Ankle Surgery, kicked him in the stuff, and took his girl.

Take that ankle surgery!

Now on to my next personal goal – recover from surgery and run another 5k under 30.

I am not going to let surgery hold me back.

This is just one of my personal goals. But I firmly believe the saying, “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.”

What goals are you working towards?
